BREXIT AND FISHERIES

THE LESSON TO HUMANKIND

The United Kingdom was part of European Union which had a long legacy in international relation as an example of cooperative world order. The European Union has its root in the second world war which resulted from the greater ultra-nationalism, that ultranationalism ruined not only the so-called developed countries of today and then colonizer. Every time they become wise only after bloody wars like in the past 30 years of wars which leads to the Westphalian system of governments and then the great world war. The former led to stable governments for a long time and the later into one of prerequisite for nation formations the united nations and European union even though the global institution's success is relative but regional institutions is the benchmark for others. Likewise, we will develop a system to help navigate pandemic situations Covid19 let’s hope

A REGIONAL ORGANISATION FOR EUROPE

The aftermath of ww2 demanded the cooperation among the European nations strongly which one point led to the prescription of the united nation of Europe by Winston Churchill. The first seeds were from THE HAGUE CONGRESS which founded the European Movement International and of the College of Europe, for Europe's future leaders would live and study together. It also led directly to the founding of the Council of Europe in 1949.IN 1952 the disappointed six started the European steel and coal community seed for European federation. the federation integrated the various nations industry into the web which is necessary for waging war. After with series of treaty various country joined the union some even joined the monetary union also which has common currency EURO. They even developed to a stage where you don't need visa any more called Schengen visa a largest free travel area in the world.

UK AND EU

The UNITED KINGDOM was a member of the European Union and of its predecessor the European economic community (EEC) from 1 January 1973 until 31 January 2020. Until Brexit ended 47 years of membership. During these 47 years of relationship with mainland Europe UK not always had a smooth relationship. before the 2016 referendum through which people of United Kingdom people said to come out of European union but in the 1975 referendum the earlier generation opted to stay in the community. Black Wednesday event was scare in UK citizens which put the UK out of eurozone ultimately. Fast forward in the UK, The Euroscepticism developed slowly but deeply among Britons which was evident from the UK Independence party ascendence as the single largest party from Europe in 2014 European election to EU parliament it as a milestone as no party in national level since 1910 got first rank other than conservatives or labour. That was then considered the precursor to the 2016 referendum. The referendum resulted in 48% to 52% in favour of leaving the EU.

BREXIT

The acronym stands for Britain Exit. After the referendum in 2016, David Cameron resigned his leadership to give way to Theresa May. The steps were taken by May also not fruitful. which led to resigning her position in favour of Boris Johnson who sensing the difficulty from opposing groups extended the deadline to seek the fresh mandate of people which led to conservatives’ massive victory in decades. Boris Johnson took solid steps and both UK and EU parliament ratified Britain withdrawal agreement which allowed the UK to come out of EU on midnight of 31/1/2020.In the transition period till 31/12/2020, Britain will be in European Union and both will start the talks on future relations

TO TRADE DEALS

The UK and the EU are currently working on a post-Brexit deal that will determine key aspects of their relationship, such as defence, trade, security and immigration export and import, fisheries and others. Among the many unresolved issues in the negotiations, one is the determination of both sides to not let the other fish in their EEZ.

POLICY ON FISHERIES

As fisheries is one of economic resource it is exclusive in the 200 nautical miles EEZ of the concerned coastal country. But the policy so far in European union is that any member nation's fleet can fish in the EEZ of bloc members. During talks, the United Kingdom demands the system called zonal attachment, the system which is being used by the bloc to divide the fisheries resource with non-EU Countries like Norway and others. The EU rejected it saying the united kingdom’s waters are more bountiful than the other water. As the contribution of fisheries in the kingdom's economy is 0.1% apparently UK’s politically-significant fishing communities, which employ thousands of people have insisted that such a system would allow them greater access to waters.

As per the BBC, UK negotiators want British fleets to take over 50 per cent of the catch that EU vessels currently haul every year from Britain’s waters; the total being estimated at around 600 million pounds annually. On December 18, Britain rejected an offer from the EU in which the bloc agreed to let go around 25 per cent of that amount, as per Bloomberg.

EXPECTED

If suppose the no-deal Brexit is the reality the United Kingdom has the muscle to prevent the others from fishing in its waters, Consequently, Britain will have to deal with the associated tariffs on its fisheries products in the bloc which was the biggest importer of UK’s fishery products. So, I think the UK will come down from its original position. If not, the tropical countries will have some relaxation in EU norms (non-tariff barriers) innovation of developed countries to prevent the import from developing and to circumvent the WTO rules. The UK has given high priority to India as evident from Boris Johnson’s first foreign visit post Brexit will be to India for republic day. India should try to secure a trade deal with the UK in the post Brexit environment as we can get more favourable terms than ever. Long stretched trade deal talks between India and the EU should be hurried in the post Brexit and Post corona situation. Which will lead to more export and greater investment in India by Europeans industries
