Gandhi and Nobel peace prize

Gandhi's immense potential as the leader has attracted immense people from simple to aristocracy spectra of people in India as well as the world. His doctrine has the unique speciality of infallibility, yes Ahimsa and satyagraha are infallible against any form of oppression in all ages. Though this Half Naked Indian murdered the supremacy and colonialistic tendency of then world superpower Britain without deadly weapons and bloodshed, He was not honoured with the Nobel prize the said prestigious prize for peace. In this article, we will analyze that in detail.

Nobel Prize History

Alfred Nobel after successfully converting highly explosive nitroglycerine a liquid into dynamite by mixing some type of sand. The dynamite patent changed the world by transforming it into deadly weapons in wars. At one point in time, Nobel has factories in more than twenty countries. Even though his business was very successful he did not stop his quest for discovery at the time of his death he has 355 patents. After seeing his invention turned into Warmachine he wrote a will which opened many controversies after some years his most of fortunes were laid for noble prizes. His most fortunes are converted into capital and interest from that is shared with people who gave the most valuable service to mankind in the field of physics, chemistry, medicine, peace, literature. Later economics was not added but given by the separate organisation.

Nobel peace prize

As per the will of Alfred Nobel, one part of the prize to the person who has done the most or best to advance fellowship among nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the establishment and promotion of peace congresses.

 Gandhi and peace prize

Gandhi had been nominated to the peace prize for five times 1937,1938,1939,1947,1948. The first four-time it was awarded to some others and in 1948 the last time it was not awarded to anyone. The reason for not awarding the prize in 1948 was "no suitable living candidate was found" absolutely it was Gandhi who was murdered few days before the end of nomination for prize.

Nomination game

In 1937 the labour party member of  Norwegian parliament Ole Colbjørnsen. The advisor to the committee gave an unrealistic and non-meaningful report in which he said Gandhi was a good person in a personal capacity but his characterization as a political leader was not good. I think he gave without understanding the Indian circumstances and leadership quality needed for India. He went on to characterize him as a dictator, this report prevented awarding the prize to mahatma that year.  There was an unconfirmed(apparently considering the power) Great Britain had its role to prevent the prize from reaching Gandhi. The following two years Gandhi was, again and again, nominated but in 1938 was awarded to a refugee organization and in 1939 onwards none was awarded till 1944.

Gandhi was again nominated in 1947 but he was declined on the reason that India was in a deep state of dismay that is the partition and following communal riots. In 1948 Gandhi was again nominated but unfortunately, he was murdered before the process could be completed.  Up to 1960, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded exclusively to Europeans and Americans. The committee’s horizon was narrow then. Gandhi was very definitely different then earlier Laureates.

The observations

The omission of the Gandhi is deeply regretted by the Nobel Committee. In the year 1989; when the Dalai Lama was awarded the Peace Prize; the chairman of the Nobel committee said that this award to the Dalai Lama is a "tribute to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi”

In 2006, Geir Lundestad, permanent secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, “The greatest omission in our 106-year history is undoubtedly that Mahatma Gandhi never received the Nobel Peace Prize.

No Need of certificate

In a civil suit filed in the Karnataka High court praying the court to direct the Home ministry to award Gandhi with Bharath Ratna award. The court observed “Why this atrocity on our father of the nation? He is above all…and does not require a certificate,” a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice D.H. Waghela and Justice B.V. Nagarathna observed orally when the petitioner’s counsel briefly narrated the gist of the petition. After that the court rejected the petition.

This observation by the Honorable justice holds true for Nobel prize also. As many of the followers of Non violence were awarded it is indeed for Gandhi one who implemented the strategy and won for first time
